Kitende beat Standard High to the title/ samson Opus

St Mary’s Kitende lifted the Copa Coca cola secondary school trophy after piping Standard High School Zana 1-0 in a worth final at Arua Hill ground Saturday evening.

Kitende, who last lifted the title in 2008 at the same venue, looked to have run out of luck until their midfielder Fred Egau showed three seconds of brilliance and punished Standard for the lapse in an all Wakiso final.

With two Standard defenders failing to clear an aerial ball, and instead colliding with each other just out of the area, Egau made no mistake.

He got the ball, controlled it so well, deceived the defenders that he was running out of the area, and as the Standard High defender came for a tackle, he calmly pulled away the ball to leave him sliding.

He then shot it at the back of the net for the only goal in the final, to start jubilations amongst the school fans.

Standard High, who had hitherto the encounter never won any national title-despite lifting the East African title, tried to push on, but they were shy in front of goal to let Kitende match to their fifth school’s title.

Kitende had eliminated Masaka SS 1-0 in the semifinals, while Standard High eliminated Bulo 1-0 in the other semifinal.

The low note of the championships was however the failure of crowning St. Mary Kitende’s Eddie Mubiru as the most valuable player.

Despite an injury earlier in the match, Mubiru lifted Kitende from the group stages and through to the finals. The title was instead given to quarterfinalist Kibuli SS captain Rahmat Kiyonga Senfuka, which action was also criticized by almost all the coaches, including Kibuli SS technical bench.
