Is Facebook's popularity waning in the West?

Is Facebook's popularity waning in the West?
The social networking site is growing worldwide, but the number of people using it is falling in Western countries.
Last Modified: 15 Jun 2011 14:12

The number of people using Facebook has dropped in the UK for the second month in a row, mirroring similar falls in the US, Canada and Norway - giving the first signs that the social network's popularity may be waning in the west.

But the website continues to grow worldwide, hitting an all-time high of 687 million users. That is according to data from the tracking company Inside Facebook, which uses Facebook's own advertising tools to determine the number of people using the site every month.

Growth has slowed, however, having risen by 13.9 million accounts in April and then just 11.8 million in May. Typically in the past year it has grown by 20 million a month. That slowdown could thwart founder Mark Zuckerberg's ambition to reach one billion users worldwide, despite his prediction last June that: "It is almost a guarantee that it will happen."

Just why has the use of Facebook peaked this way in Western countries while it seems to continue to rise around the world?

Inside Story with presenter Teymoor Nabili discusses with guests: Charlotte McEleny, a senior reporter for the New Media Age publication; Kevin Anderson, a technology journalist; and Barry Fox, a contributing editor for Consumer Electronics Daily.

LG Revolution review

LG Revolution review

The army of high-speed broadband phones is actively seeking new recruits to join its rapidly-growing force, and the LG Revolution is the latest to graduate from boot camp. We've witnessed the emergence of three Verizon LTE handsets in as many months, beginning with the HTC Thunderbolt and the Samsung Droid Charge a few weeks later. As if this wasn't enough choice to tempt your tastebuds already, the LG Revolution -- the entertaining climax to the classic 4G trilogy -- was born one full moon after that. With three options, all so close to each other in dimension and features, it's natural to compare all of 'em and make the call on which one is the best of the bunch. Is LG's first crack at Verizon's LTE network truly a game-changer, as its name suggests? Or does this Revolution fail to even get its feet off the ground? Read on after the break to find out.

Acer announces Predator G5910 for the UK with up to 8TB of storage, 'combat-machine' design cues

Acer's been mighty busy the past few days, trotting out laptops, desktops, a media streamer, and a multitouch monitor, to boot. But the company wasn't ready to call it a week just yet -- the outfit also announced the Predator G5910 gaming rig for the UK gaming crowd. As you might gather from its reddish accents and claw-like doors -- a "combat-machine" aesthetic, according to Acer -- this is a power tower.

Legislation criminalizing creation of computer viruses enacted

TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Japan's parliament enacted legislation Friday criminalizing the creation or distribution of computer viruses to crack down on the growing problem of cybercrimes, but critics say the move could infringe on the constitutionally guaranteed privacy of communications.

Don't bring your computer viruses to Japan, because they're illegal now

Don't bring your computer viruses to Japan, because they're illegal now

Tired of getting swamped with spam and malware? Just pack your things and catch the next flight to Japan, where computer viruses are now considered illegal. Under the country's new legislation, anyone convicted of creating or distributing viruses could face up to three years in prison, or a maximum fine of ¥500,000 (about $6,200). It's all part of Japan's efforts to comply with the Convention on Cybercrime -- an international treaty that requires member governments to criminalize hacking, child pornography, and other terrible things. Privacy advocates, however, have already raised concerns over some stipulations that would allow investigators to seize data from PCs hooked up to allegedly criminal networks, and to retain any suspicious e-mail logs for up to 60 days. In an attempt to quell these fears, the Judicial Affairs Committee tacked a resolution on to the bill calling for police to exercise these powers only when they really, really need to.

Vandals posing as builders paint Microsoft Windows logo on Apple store under construction in Hamburg

By DAILY MAIL REPORTER
Last updated at 8:23 AM on 7th June 2011

It was a prank perhaps worthy of something the guerrilla artist Banksy might produce. However the end result was less street art, more geek art.
People who walked past this new Apple Store, due to open in the German city of Hamburg, might well have wondered why a logo advertising the company's arch rival appeared on its wall.
In an act of vandalism, which may well have been inspired by the graffiti street artist Banksy, four enterprising pranksters plastered the logo for Microsoft Windows on the side of the building's construction barricade.

Five Ways Apple Rips-Off Android with iOS 5

okayApple unveiled a host of new features in iOS 5 due out this fall including revamped notifications, over-the-air updates, and cloud data storage.
You might even call these new features magical or revolutionary, unless you're an Android user, then you'd call them "stuff I've been using for years."
The latest additions to Apple's mobile OS are probably a welcome relief for iPhone and iPad fans, but it's hard to call iOS "the world's most advanced mobile operating system" when Apple is playing catch up to Android. Here's a look at the five biggest Android rip-offs in iOS 5.
