If what was witnessed during the second leg of the 2011 Club National Beach Volleyball Circuit at Lido in Entebbe on Sunday is anything to go by, then beach volleyball has come of age in Uganda.

The local players exhibited a level of competitiveness not seen before – something that must have left the national selectors, coaches and fans fancying the nation’s chances ahead of the Mozambique All Africa Games (September 3-18), London Olympic Qualifiers (May 2011), Agadir Men’s Open in Morocco (October 4-9) and Phuket Women’s Open Thailand (November 1-6).

With a full house in attendance, lively partners Emma Kato and Richard Tamale, who had last won in April 2010, rekindled their winning culture in style with 23-21, 21-16 (2-0) victory over gritty Amon Ainebyona and Isaac Omedo.

The Omedos were on track for the title in the first set but failed to remain composed and focused throughout, allowing the Tamales to rally and make them pay for the inexcusable mistakes.

The one-hour contest was all over when the Omedos succumbed to a 21-16 successive second set loss.

In the ladies category, Vivienne Aketch and Sharon Pajije made it clear that they would not surrender their title to any pairing when they ousted the much-feared Kenyan team of Julia Sakaya and Juma Yelena in straight sets 21-18 and 21-14 at the semifinals stage.

They followed up that ruthless display with a clinical one over their seniors Alice Okecho and Josephine Nammanda 10-21, 21-10, 15-12 (2-1) to keep the title.
